Dodge Viper GTS Coupe

As one of the most intriguing cars to come out of Detroit alongside the Chevrolet Corvette, the Dodge Viper GTS Coupe has quite a history.

After a slew of heavy automobiles that flew off of production lines in the 1980s, Chrysler shot for the moon and made something incredible. From first-place finishes in world-renowned car races like the 24-hour Les Mans and Daytona to the backroads of the American public, this one-of-a-kind sports car has truly seen it all.

This is the story of the Dodge Viper GTS Coupe.

A History of Pure Speed – the Dodge Viper GTS Coupe

The Dodge Viper GTS Coupe can’t be discussed without first talking about the Dodge Viper. The Dodge Viper came off of production lines in 1992 as a feat of then-modern engineering. It utilized 335 mm rear tires and a ridiculously tough 8.0L V-10 engine. At the time, it was easily comparable to the top-of-the-line V-12 Ferraris.

This was thanks to Bob Lutz, who was the president of Chrysler operations at the time and wanted nothing more than to build a modern sports car modeled after the Shelby Cobra. As for the engine, it was all a matter of taking the V-10 out of the heavy-duty Dodge Ram pickup that they were manufacturing at the time too.

Even when the Dodge Viper hit it big, it wasn’t long before the team at Dodge wanted to push it further.

Feeling the Bite of the Dodge Viper GTS Coupe

The last of the Dodge Viper GTS Coupes was in 2002 before it was replaced by the GTS-R and the SRT-10 in the mid-2000s. There were only 360 final editions Dodge Viper GTS Coupe ever made to help commemorate the last year of production. It came with 450 horsepower thanks to the powerful V-10 engine. This gave the car a 0-60 time of 4.5 seconds.

A Timeline of the Dodge Viper GTS Coupe

The Dodge Viper GTS Coupe acted like an upgrade to the regular Dodge Viper. This fastback model utilized higher compression, intake and exhaust upgrades, and a revised cooling system. Some of the other top features of the GTS Coupe included power windows, adjustable pedals, and driver and passenger airbags.

Small door handles and roll-up windows were also added to the exterior to give the car a bit more legitimacy for those who were trying to decide between these and Porsches. By 1997, Chrysler had added the RT/10 to the line, which utilized a lot of the same features as the original GTS.

When 1998 rolled around, Chrysler began working on the GT2, which many people know as the GTS-R, even though that is technically the racing version of the GT2 and was not legal for street use. These GT2s were commemorative edition vehicles and only one hundred of them were ever made. The GT2s were pretty easy to spot, as they had a blue accent trim, an Oreca five-point racing harness, and a plaque on the center dash with the production number unique to the vehicle.

In terms of speed, the GT2 had increased 10 horsepower from the original GTS to provide racers with a whopping 460 horsepower. This added speed could also be attributed to the K&N air filter and new smooth tubes that connected the intake manifold to the filter. While the original GTS was certainly the most popular, many consider the GT2 to be the pinnacle of the GTS era.
