Ford F-150 Raptor

We don’t typically think of flatbed trucks as being particularly fast when compared to other automobiles, though that is exactly what makes the F-150 Raptor unique.

After placing third in the 8 class during the 2008 Baja 1000, Ford secured its place in the industry as a serious off-road vehicle manufacturer. After almost a decade in production, the F-150 Raptor is one of the most sought after trucks in its class.

The New Age of Dinosaurs – a Brief History of the Ford F-150 Raptor

Though the F-150 had never been considered a truck that couldn’t face harsh trails and overland adventures, Ford wanted to create a truck that was built for it specifically. The Ford Special Vehicle Team got working, drawing a lot of influence from the classic Ford Lightning. After spending years marketing the GT350 and Cobra, the team eventually geared up for the Ford F-150 SVT debut at the 2008 SEMA show

Innovations in Off-Roading

At 500lbs lighter than the generation before, the 2019 Ford F-150 Raptor is a military-grade, aluminum alloy, lean, mean, off-road machine. It utilizes Trail Control and the Ford Terrain Management System to run off-road with ease, and a 3.5L EcoBoost engine with direct and port fuel injection, giving the truck 450 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque.

The Ford F-150 Raptor – Over the Years

  • First Generation F-150 Raptor (2010-2014)

The first generation F-150 Raptor, otherwise known as the Raptor SVT, had a 310 horsepower V-8 engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. It shared a cab design with the regular F-150, though it utilized wider front fenders and a wider pickup bed to accommodate the large tires.

  • Second Generation F-150 Raptor (2017-Present)

After two years of not being manufactured, the F-150 Raptor came back without the SVT acronym. It utilized an aluminum body and was available in both SuperCrew and SuperCab configurations. The weight was reduced by almost 500lbs and the V-8 engine was replaced by a 3.5L twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V-6 engine.
